With bright, attractive illustrations and a heartwarming story that suggests you will find the right friends for you without having to be just like everyone else this would be a really enjoyable Autumn/Halloween read with young children (3-6)。 A great text for use in an SPHE lesson celebrating our unique qualities or as inspiration for an art lesson to design your own unique 'jack o lantern' face, I can definitely see myself using this in a junior primary classroom。 Thanks to Netgalley。co。uk and With bright, attractive illustrations and a heartwarming story that suggests you will find the right friends for you without having to be just like everyone else this would be a really enjoyable Autumn/Halloween read with young children (3-6)。 A great text for use in an SPHE lesson celebrating our unique qualities or as inspiration for an art lesson to design your own unique 'jack o lantern' face, I can definitely see myself using this in a junior primary classroom。 Thanks to Netgalley。co。uk and DK Children for the free eARC of this book in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

A sweet Halloween story about being yourself! Nobody wants the happy pumpkin and the other scary pumpkins make fun of him until the perfect match for him comes along。 A nice story to show Halloween doesn’t have to be all about the spooky。 Adorable illustrations。Thank you to the publisher and Net Galley for the early e-copy in exchange for an honest review。

A sweet children's book, ideal for introducing young children to the celebration of Hallowe'en whilst also making them aware that it doesn't have to be a scary time, to be a good time! The Happy Pumpkin is a story about a smiley pumpkin at halloween。 All of the other pumpkins around him are pulling their scariest face trying to get picked by the children looking for a spooky pumpkin。 Yet he has a big smile and is not picked until last。 It’s a cute story! Thank you Netgalley for the arc。

This is such an adorable little book with the message that it is absolutely fine to be who you are even if you are different to everyone else, and that if you are anxious about what people might think that is fine too - those feelings are valid but most importantly keep being and doing you。 A wonderful message for children from a young age。

Meh。I bought this book on a whim, because the cover looked pretty cute, and I respond to true cuteness。 Unfortunately, the fairly bland, two-dimensional illustrations inside did nothing for me。 Then there is the message, all about inclusivity, longing to belong, and the idea of 'someone for everyone。' All of that is fine and good, but it's also a message which by now has been beaten into the ground with a hundred-thousand shovels。 In order to really trot that theme out again and make it shine, s Meh。I bought this book on a whim, because the cover looked pretty cute, and I respond to true cuteness。 Unfortunately, the fairly bland, two-dimensional illustrations inside did nothing for me。 Then there is the message, all about inclusivity, longing to belong, and the idea of 'someone for everyone。' All of that is fine and good, but it's also a message which by now has been beaten into the ground with a hundred-thousand shovels。 In order to really trot that theme out again and make it shine, something truly inspired is required。 I don't see much inspiration here。Maybe, though, my grandson will see things differently when I present the book to him this Halloween。 If he does, I'll return to this review and update it with the hands-on take of a real three-year-old。 In parting, though, I should explain the main reason I've given the book a fairly low rating。 It's all about the text。 The publishers made an egregious error in the coloring of the text--when it's placed on a dark background, the text remains black, making it EXTREMELY hard to read。 Oh, and there's a lot of dark background, because the story takes place either at dusk or in full darkness。 WHY could the text not have been made white or yellow? Sigh。 I'm afraid the entire production has a flavor of 'hurry, hurry, let's get this done so it can go to print。' 。。。more

I received an advanced e-copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review。Beautiful charming illustrations which capture perfectly and a lovely message about how it is okay to be different。Wish a little more time could have been spent on how it’s okay to enjoy the less spooky side of Halloween from a human perspective。 Also a touch confusing that the pumpkins already seemed to be Jack O lanterns but also talked about being made scary。 Perhaps this story would have benefited from I received an advanced e-copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review。Beautiful charming illustrations which capture perfectly and a lovely message about how it is okay to be different。Wish a little more time could have been spent on how it’s okay to enjoy the less spooky side of Halloween from a human perspective。 Also a touch confusing that the pumpkins already seemed to be Jack O lanterns but also talked about being made scary。 Perhaps this story would have benefited from a pumpkin picking scene and then a pumpkin decorating scene where one child makes a scary pumpkin and another makes a happy one。 。。。more

All of the pumpkins in the pumpkin patch look forward to going home with a human family and being turned into a scary jack-o-lantern in this new Halloween board book from illustrator MacKenzie Haley and an uncredited author。 As pumpkins are selected, one by one, the eponymous happy pumpkin finds that no one wants him, as he isn't frightening enough。 Eventually however, a family with a very timid little boy arrives, and the pumpkin finds himself selected after all。。。Although The Happy Pumpkin was All of the pumpkins in the pumpkin patch look forward to going home with a human family and being turned into a scary jack-o-lantern in this new Halloween board book from illustrator MacKenzie Haley and an uncredited author。 As pumpkins are selected, one by one, the eponymous happy pumpkin finds that no one wants him, as he isn't frightening enough。 Eventually however, a family with a very timid little boy arrives, and the pumpkin finds himself selected after all。。。Although The Happy Pumpkin was published in board book format, and I have therefore added it to my board-books shelf, I read it in a digital edition and did not get to experience it as a tactile object。 Leaving that aside, I found myself mostly indifferent to it, and did not enjoy it as I expected to do。 I appreciated the message—that some children don't enjoy the scarier aspects of Halloween, and that we should accept people as they are—but the delivery felt a little wanting。 I think the problem here is that the narrative (from an anonymous author) is divided between the pumpkin's story—he wants to go home with a family, and fulfill his purpose—and the human one, in which a family arrives with one child who enjoys the spooky part of the season and one who does not。 The author doesn't seem sure if this is a pumpkin story, or a human one。 I was distracted moreover, by the internal consistency in the story, as the pumpkins want to be made into jack-o-lanterns, but all already have faces, with the accompanying expressions。 Surely this is something that becoming a jack-o-lantern provides? I think this would have worked better if it were about a human family, one which carved two jack-o-lanterns—one spooky, one happy and friendly—thereby demonstrating that Halloween can be many things。Unfortunately, this one doesn't really succeed, either as an unusual pumpkin story, or as a story demonstrating that Halloween doesn't have to be spooky。 。。。more

This book doesn't even make sense。 Judging by the fact that there isn't even an author listed, it looks like nothing more than an opportunity for the publisher to cash in on Halloween by releasing a book about pumpkins。 But it's ridiculous。 Near the beginning, the book states:Today, every pumpkin in townwould be chosen by a child andmade into a shining, butSCARY jack-o'-lantern。 What's the problem? I guess the idea of plunging a carving knife into an anthropomorphized pumpkin's head was just too much。 But now the story doesn't make any sense。So, anyway, nobody wants the Happy Pumpkin because he's smiley rather than scary。 Finally, a little boy who's scared of Halloween takes the Happy Pumpkin。 And we're all taught that we shine the brightest when we're just being ourselves。The illustrations are fine。 They're kind of cute, actually。 But I feel sorry for the illustrator when they were given this mess of a story。 I'll bet there was a lot of head-scratching going on。 "So the kids are supposed to pick pre-carved pumpkins and turn them into jack-o'-lanterns? What kind of pumpkin patch is this?"Just another holiday money grab。 Moving on。。。 。。。more

Very sweet。 Love the message。 It's nothing new, but the delivery is great here。 It's okay to be yourself。。。 and someone will love you exactly the way you are。 I love how the happy (not-scary) pumpkin finally finds his perfect match in the boy who doesn't really like Halloween。 The illustrations carry through the message of being true to yourself -- such as when the sister (who loves Halloween) is dressed in her Halloween costume and smiling by her scary pumpkin and the boy (who doesn't like Hall Very sweet。 Love the message。 It's nothing new, but the delivery is great here。 It's okay to be yourself。。。 and someone will love you exactly the way you are。 I love how the happy (not-scary) pumpkin finally finds his perfect match in the boy who doesn't really like Halloween。 The illustrations carry through the message of being true to yourself -- such as when the sister (who loves Halloween) is dressed in her Halloween costume and smiling by her scary pumpkin and the boy (who doesn't like Halloween) is not dressed in a costume, but is smiling next to his not-scary pumpkin。 Neither the child who loves Halloween nor the child who does not is touted as being "right" or "wrong。" I think this is wonderful for the child who doesn't like Halloween or "scary" stuff as they will feel seen, but it also doesn't take anything away from the kid who likes the scary stuff。 "Because we always shine our brightest when we are just who we are。" 。。。more

I like a nice corrective to the whole Halloween brouhaha now and again, and this is a perfect one。 A field of pumpkins have already been carved into beastly shapes before they're chosen by the public, but one is a gormless-looking grinner。 A cute, happy-with-itself, gormless-looking grinner。 The only child to pick that would be a shy lad, not keen on the whole spook-fest and vaguely afraid of being in a large farm field at dusk with nothing to choose but a gurning gourd。 Luckily, such a child ex I like a nice corrective to the whole Halloween brouhaha now and again, and this is a perfect one。 A field of pumpkins have already been carved into beastly shapes before they're chosen by the public, but one is a gormless-looking grinner。 A cute, happy-with-itself, gormless-looking grinner。 The only child to pick that would be a shy lad, not keen on the whole spook-fest and vaguely afraid of being in a large farm field at dusk with nothing to choose but a gurning gourd。 Luckily, such a child exists – and thank the heavens for all our differences。 No, I shouldn't normally convey the whole plot and the whole message, but it's such a welcome and yet such an obvious one, and my readers aren't the ones who will judge these pages – kids will easily love this bright and colourful story without my impetus。 I've made it patently obvious what you're getting, which is a successful book。 I'll leave the real surprises for the night itself。。。 Four and a half stars。 。。。more

This is a cute and uplifting book that follows a Happy Pumpkin, who is teased and left behind for being 'different'。I really enjoyed the lessons it teaches such as being apologetically yourself, that it's okay to be different, and that everyone has their own likes, fears and preferences。 The illustrations were delightful as well。A meaningful and lovely read that's perfect for all children。I received an e-ARC of this book via Netgalley。 This is a cute and uplifting book that follows a Happy Pumpkin, who is teased and left behind for being 'different'。I really enjoyed the lessons it teaches such as being apologetically yourself, that it's okay to be different, and that everyone has their own likes, fears and preferences。 The illustrations were delightful as well。A meaningful and lovely read that's perfect for all children。I received an e-ARC of this book via Netgalley。 。。。more
